Google is all set to update it’s algorithm, and the good news is that the search giant is actually telling everyone about it much before they roll it out. As announced on the Google Webmaster Central blog, from April 21st, Google will expand the use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This update will help users to find more mobile-friendly content.

Basically, this update has a good and bad news for all the webmasters out there. Well! The bad news is for websites that have a poor or low quality experience. The good news is that there is still time for the update to go live, and you still have time to get on the right side of the law and keep everything in order. The change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and search results will have a significant impact. As a result, users will be able to find get relevant, high quality search results optimized as per their devices.

What’s most likely to happen?

Though Google hasn’t yet revealed any details associated with the details, Gary Illyes (Webmaster trends analyst), this is what will likely happen:

  • Responsive design does not have a ranking benefit
  • Googlebot must be allowed to crawl CSS & JavaScript to pass the “mobile-friendly” test
  • Mobile friendliness is determined at the page level – not sitewide
  • Tablets will not be affected by this update
  • Google is currently working on a dedicated mobile index

So, if you are on the wrong side of the law, then you might lose lot of traffic.

  • Firstly, make sure you have a mobile friendly website design.
  • Take care of any mobile usability related issues in Google Webmaster Tools
  • If your website has an Android app, make sure it deep linked and indexed.
  • Monitor your metrics carefully up to and following the rollout of the April 21 algo change.
